Deseret News: MTC missionaries spend Thanksgiving preparing 350,000 meal packs

Between 1200-1500 missionaries learn about a service project they will partake in on Thanksgiving Day
at the Missionary Training Center.

Over 350,000 meals were assembled
that will be shipped to the Utah Food Bank.

PROVO — While spending Thanksgiving nearly 3,000 miles from his home in Oahu, Hawaii, Elder Kivalu Ramanlal knew his family misses him for a special reason.
"I'm usually the one who cooks our Thanksgiving," Elder Ramanlal said with a knowing smile.
But Elder Ramanlal, who in a few weeks will leave the Missionary Training Center to serve a Mandarin-speaking mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City, said Thursday that he couldn't see himself doing anything other than taking part in what has been called one of the largest humanitarian efforts in the church not related to a natural disaster.
"This is one of the best Thanksgivings I've ever had," Elder Ramanlal said. "Nothing really gives you the feeling that service does."
Elder Ramanlal and about 1,200 other missionaries, who will soon leave to 38 different countries, spent much of their Thanksgiving afternoon preparing and packaging apporximately 350,000 meal packs for Utah children in need.
The meals are instant, only requiring water to prepare for eating, are comprised of rice, lentil beans, dried vegetables and himalayan salt. All 60,000 pounds of the pre-made casseroles will be given to students throughout Utah at Title 1 elementary schools, which have a high percentage of students from low income families.
"It's humbling to serve in a variety of ways," said Elder Cameron Joly of Draper, who is preparing to serve in the Taiwain Taipei Mission. "A year ago I wouldn't have even thought of doing something like this on Thanksgiving. But now I know I'm doing something more important. It's very nice to fill (even) one bag and know it's helping."
Far removed from the typical comforts of Thanksgiving with family and loved ones, missionaries were in high spirits as they poured the food into bags and packaged into boxes, talked with each other and listened to upbeat gospel-centered music.
"It's a fun opportunity to know I'm helping," said Sister Cecily Roberts, from Marietta, Georgia, who will also be serving in the Taiwain Taipei mission. "I think it's a good way ... to get away from yourself."
The large undertaking, just one part of a much-looked-forward-to day at the MTC, was coordinated by LDS Humanitarian Services with the help of Florida-based non-profit Feeding Children Everywhere.
Rick Foster, the manager of LDS Humanitarian Services for North America, spoke to the missionaries before they went to work, telling them he was grateful they were about to be "doers of the word," rather than hearers or proclaimers only, referring to the New Testament teaching in James 1:22. He told them that service to others on their missions would create connections and cause people's prejudices to "melt away."
"(God) is so mindful of us," Foster said, and blesses those who serve His children.
Dan Campbell, founder and CEO of Feeding Children Everywhere, also spoke to the missionaries before they went to work preparing, bagging and then boxing lentil casseroles. Campbell, who is not LDS, called the missionaries "world changers" and said they were directly answering the prayers of hungry children who pray for food.
"You're opening their eyes to more than just a meal, you're opening their eyes to faith," Campbell said. "(The meals) don't just fill a belly, they fill a heart. ... We couldn't have done it without you."
Campbell said the project, which has been done on Thanksgiving at the MTC for the past three years, is one of the largest that his organization has ever coordinated. He expected that by the end of the day, more than one million meals would have been prepared for children in need as a result of the past three projects combined.
Elder Dallin H. Oaks, a member of the Quorom of the Twelve Apostles, spoke to the missionaries earlier Thursday. He spoke about the necessity of gratitude – not just for individuals, but for societies too.
Sister Amber Hughes of Bountiful, who will also be serving in the Taiwain Taipei mission, said she was grateful for the opportunity to go to work doing good for others while spending Thanksgiving in the MTC.
"Our purpose as missionaries is to follow Jesus Christ and one of the greatest aspects of His life was services," Sister Hughes said. "It's definitely hard being away from family for the holiday, but honestly, I can't imagine doing anything else right now."

(HAPPY THANKSGIVING)!!!!!!!!!

I have officially been in the MTC for a month now!! It does not feel like it at!! I am so incredibly grateful to be in the MTC for Thanksgiving!! I know this isn't my normal day to email but we have lots to do tomorrow so we were allowed to email the day before!

Thanksgiving here is going to be absolutely incredible!! We have a service project tomorrow where we are making 320,000 boxed meals! I am so excited to be able to do service tomorrow!

We also have an Apostle coming to speak to us tomorrow! Here General Authorities are like celebrities! I am so excited to be able to hear from one of them tomorrow!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving I want to say the top 11 things I am grateful for!

1.  I am grateful to be serving this mission! I have felt so blessed while I have been here at the MTC! It hasn't been easy and there are days when I am frustrated but every single time I feel this way I think of the people in Poland I am going to go teach! I have already developed such an immense love for the Polish people and I can't wait to go and share the gospel with them!! I have  learned so much about myself while I have been out here and I can't wait to continue to become the missionary the Lord wants me to be!

2.  I am grateful for the cold!! In Utah it has definitely become colder but I know its nothing like Poland cold! As some of you may know I do not really love the cold... at all!! This week we found out from some people in our zone who talked to some of the Polish Elders that left before us, that the first day we get there we have to street contact 10 people before we go get our coats! That is going to be quite the adventure! However, I am starting to get excited to experience a Polish Winter!!

3.  I am grateful for Poland! Each day we walk into our class I see the giant Polish flag hanging on our wall and I am filled with such pride! I know that I am suppose to be going to Poland for a reason and I can't wait to set foot on Polish soil in just a few weeks!! Ahh!!

4.  I am grateful for Polish!! This week we have learned more cases and more vocab! This language is absolutely crazy, but also absolutely wonderful! I can't wait until I can speak it without having to think how to conjugate each verb and case in each sentence! I have never had such a determination to learn something before but I think it is because of how much I love the language already!!

5.  I am grateful for the MTC! I have learned so much here already! The top three things I have learned so far are:
1. How true the gospel is!
2. It is OK not to be 100% all the time! If all you can give after really trying is a 3 out of 10 that day then the Lord is happy and you can be too!
3. Love and the Spirit can speak volumes when you can't in Polish!
I have so much more to learn while I am here but I am thankful for every single experience I have had, both the hard and the good!

6.  I am grateful for my district!! I have never felt such an immediate love for people before like I have with my district! We each have something different to offer but without it we wouldn't be complete! That thought has been in my mind this whole week that if we didn't have one of us we could not be the district we are right now! We did this amazing activity this week during our district meeting where we each wrote something we were thankful for about each person in our district! We then read them out loud and it was amazing to see how much love filled our small classroom! I could not have been more blessed to be placed in the district I am! I love each of them dearly and they have a special place in my heart! They have become my new family!

7.  I am grateful for my companion! I know above I wrote one about my district but honestly my companion needs one just for herself! She has been the most patient, understanding, and loving companion ever! It is like I have known Sister Kamp my entire life! We just look at each other and know what the other one is thinking! She is my moral booster! One fun thing we do as a companionship is we sing together all the time, even when we shower! She has made me a stronger, better person and I will be forever grateful to her!!

8.  I am grateful for the Priesthood! This week Sister Yochim wasn't feeling well! Not only was our district worried for her but the entire zone as well! On Saturday night she was given a blessing by the Zone Leaders and our Starszy to help her to become better! Before the blessing began she asked me to say a prayer! I have never felt the Spirit so strongly before or such an intense love for someone like I did when I prayed for Sister Yochim! Starszy Ashworth then gave the blessing! It was one of the most spiritual experiences I have ever had! Starszy said the most amazing blessings I have ever heard! All of us were so touched especially because it was our Starszy blessing our Siostra! I have never been so grateful for the priesthood before and for the the young men that hold it! I don't know where I would be in my life without it!

9.  I am grateful for my family! They have supported me every step of the way! I love how they send words of encouragement and tell me about their lives each week! I am so incredibly blessed to have the family I have! Leaving them was one of the hardest things I have ever done but I know that what I am doing is right and so it makes it easier to not be homesick! They are each incredible individuals and I can't wait to run off that airplane in 17 months and see/hug them!!

10. I am grateful for the Lord! He has helped me in everything in life! I know He loves me and that is why he sent his Son! If I was the only person on Earth I know He still would have sent his Son for me! I am also grateful for Jesus Christ! I know He is my savior and my brother! I have felt God and Christ's love for me each day on my mission and I know They have the same love for all of us!

And finally..

11. I am grateful for all of you!!! Thank you for all your love and support! I love having an army behind me following me Krok po Kroku (step by step) to Poland!! It means the world to me to feel your love every day!!

Thank you again!!!

Kocham was i jestem wdzięcynz za was wszystkich!!!
(I love you and I’m grateful for you all!)

Do Widzenia!!! (Goodbye!)

Nasna choinka - Our Christmas Tree!

Dear Family and Friends!!!

I can't believe that we are three weeks down! This week was both difficult and amazing! I definitely struggled this week with the language and feeling the Spirit! I began to be really down on myself but all of sudden I started to notice all these mini miracles that kept happening through out the week that I will talk about throughout this email!

Our Pday usually ends at 4:50 and then after that we have classroom time, but last week we started this thing called TRC! It is where we go teach members a short message we prepare! These members have served in the mission before and so they speak Polish to us the entire time! I was so incredibly nervous!

Sister Kamp and I decided to teach a similar lesson on faith we taught to Karina! We are sitting in the room waiting for our first person to come in and in walks Kendall Blake! Kendall Blake is a cousin of on of my best friends from college and she reached out to me when I got my call! I was so excited and all the nervous tension I had just completely went away and our lesson was able to go so well and we were able to ask her questions about the mission which was incredible!

This past week we also taught 8 lessons! Yes 8!!!!! It was crazy! One of those lessons was a Relief Society lesson! We taught on how to recognize the spirit! I know this lesson was for me because I learned so much from it! When we were told we would be teaching Relief Society this past week I was honestly not excited! We had so many other lessons to plan and I felt like this was another thing to do!

However, when we began to teach this incredible feeling came over me and I was prompted to share an experience that I had! It was like I was reliving the experience and I just felt this immense love, peace, and joy come over me! I knew I was meant to teach that lesson to teach me!

That night the Media Director of the church came and spoke with us and revealed the new Christmas theme this year! We were able to watch the video as well! When it comes out on December first I encourage all of you to watch, it is SO GOOD!!!!!

This week we started teaching our lessons without a script! Before this Sister Kamp and I were good about just writing our lessons in English and then translating during the lesson.  We usually brought a dictionary and this little black book with helpful words for missionaries! This time though we were only allowed to write bullet points of the order of our lesson and we made a companion goal to write less than 25 vocab words to bring in with us!

Our first lesson like this was when we taught Słowek about the Book of Mormon! He had asked why he needs another book of scripture when he already has the Bible! Sister Kamp and I prepared this lesson and we felt good about it! I was so nervous and a little frustrated because I felt like I was so slow talking!

Before every lesson Sister Kamp and I say a prayer and we ask to be able to speak our language the best we could! We went in there and it was like night and day from us practicing our lesson! We understood everything he said and he understood what we said and he said everything makes sense that we taught and that he would read the Book of Mormon! We were so pumped! My whole attitude changed and I know that what happened was not by us getting all of a sudden better at Polish, we were blessed with help!

We also taught Karina this week! She has progressed so much and really wants to be baptized but her husband won't let her so we are working on that with her! It is incredible to go in those lessons with her and feel how much she has changed!

Language lesson for this week:
In Polish there is no word for "the" or "of", instead they have cases to decided how to conjugate the nouns! Cases are crazy!!!! There are seven cases in Polish! We learned two of them this week, the subject of the sentence and the direct object of the sentence! This is a short summary of how they work: cases focus on the noun and the adjective! First you look at the origin of the noun, if it ends in a consonant it is either masculine personal (if the noun is a living thing) or masculine, if it ends in an a, oć, or ość it is feminine, and if it ends in e or ę it is neutral! After you figure out that you then change the ending of the adjective to i or y for masculine personal or masculine, a if its feminine, and e if its neutral! However everything I just described is for the first case only! Each case has different endings! Talk about confusing, but honestly I love it! It is going to take a lot of practice though to remember using them when I speak! So much more makes sense now in Polish after learning about cases though, so that is good!!

Oh another thing we learned how to say what our purpose is (well a summarized version) in Polish! We sang it to the tune yankee doddle and we haven't forgotten it since! Here it is:
Zapraszamy innych by przyszli do Chrystusa pomagając im v pryzjęciu pryzwróconych prawd.
We invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored truths!!

Oh one of the best things that happened this week though was I received a slip to let me know a package had arrived! Sister Kamp and I ran to get it and the guy comes back with this CHRISTMAS TREE from my Mom!! We screamed and ran back to our room to show the other Polish sisters! We put it up that night! I can't even explain how excited I am to be in the MTC for Christmas! It was the BEST DAY EVER!!!!

I just want to let you all know how much God loves all of us and that you are never alone!! I have learned so much about myself this week as I have been able to see all the mini miracles God has put in my life! I am so grateful to be on this mission and to learn the crazy language they call Polish!! Kocham Cię!!!

Do Widzenia,

I was sooooooooo happy to see them!
Dear Family and Friends!

Another week has flown by here in the MTC! I am still loving it here! The MTC definitely pushes you but in such an incredible way! It makes me want to become a better person and I feel so happy here! So much has happened in this week!

Sister Kamp and I have been teaching non-stop! I forgot to mention last time the name of our investigator, her name is Karina! We have taught her 7 lesson now all in Polish! It is amazing to see where we started the first day and where we are now! As companions we have learned how to better teach our investigator and really focus on what she needs! We are far from perfect at it but we are getting better and better each time! We have had incredible progress with her! My favorite lesson we have taught her so far was this past lesson the topic of faith! Sister Kamp and I wanted to really break down what faith is and what is means to have faith and how you act on faith! Sister Kamp did this awesome analogy with a light switch! She explained that we faith that when we flip the switch the light will go on, we may not be able to see everything that goes on but we have faith that it will work! I then explained how we need to act on our faith and if we do this God will help us! The spirit was so strong in the room! We asked her to be baptized and she said she wanted to but needed to learn more first but she felt so good while we taught! Sister Kamp and I were smiling so big!!

We also got a new investigator named Sławek! We taught him for the first time on Tuesday! For the past two lessons, one with Karina and one with Sławek, we have just be writing down verbs or small phrases we don't know instead of translating our whole lesson! It has pushed our Polish to a whole new level! To be honest the first lesson with Sławek, when we did this, was really rough and we were a little discouraged! However, this week as a companionship we were challenged to SYL (speak your language) the entire time and we have already seen so much improvement! We have four more lessons to teach this week! Ahhh it is so crazy but also so amazing!!

My district and zone are doing well! We had to say goodbye to Elder Hymas and Elder Swink this past Sunday which was so incredibly sad! They were two Elders that were suppose to leave two weeks ago to go to the Czech Republic but their visas didn't come so they stayed here! Sister Kamp and I became really close with them so it was sad to see them go! It is crazy to think that will be me in just a short 7 weeks!!

It snowed for the first time this week as well which was so fun and not so fun! We were definitely cold! We all realized we were going to have to toughen up for the winters in Poland!

The language is coming along! We learned verb conjugations this week which made me so happy!! We now can speak a little less broken Polish! Our teacher, who sadly had to stop teaching us this past week, Brat Jensen always says "Krok po Kroku" or "step by step!" I know that is how this language is going to come! I have become much better at understanding people speak in Polish so that is good!

We now have two more teachers which is so awesome! They also play our investigators and let me tell you they are incredible actors! They are so different as teachers than investigators but I am so happy to have two teachers now!

Oh another great thing that happened this week, and this might seem funny but it was great, we got Chick Fil A for dinner! Apparently that happens every once and a while! Siostra Kamp and I were so excited!! We even snuck Chick Fil A sauce out in case of emergency!

I am sorry my email is shorter this week! I have no time to write, but I love you all so much!! I love the MTC and I am so excited to get to Poland! Sister Kamp and I talk about that every day!!

Love you all again and thank you for your support!!

Kocham Cie!!
